The Fragility of Life

The Fragility of Life - 27th July to 7th August

Claire Clark and Jordy R. Poma are friends and collaborators who have made connections between the two universities where they studied, Bath Spa University & Lourdes University in Ohio, USA.

Their individual practices are coming together in a joint exhibition at Roseberry Road Studios, The Fragility of Life, an immersive installation that blends the natural world and the human experience of loss, creating a visually unique environment of its own.

This inspiring immersive installation provides thought-provoking and important conversation around fertility, ecology and climate change.

*This exhibition includes a fundraising raffle for a women’s charity in Jordy’s hometown in Peru.

See the bottom of the page for more information.

Claire’s work is centred around pregnancy loss, grief and the complexity of pregnancy. This is represented in sculptural form as the fallen leaf, changing of the seasons and the deep water of the ocean. The foetus in her work highlights the complex nature of fertility and all its possibilities as life begins and ends. The fallen leaf mirrors our own fleeting existence on the earth and the ocean symbolic of deep-rooted emotion.

Jordy’s work invites the viewer to rethink their relationship with the natural world and think outside the box in relation to climate change. Looking to his indigenous Peruvian heritage for guidance in both traditional values and teachings, as well as food sources and healing methods, brings the fragile state of the natural world into play and addresses the impact climate change has on the natural world. His work is a call to action that we, as humans, need to re- learn how to live as part of the land.

*Las Mujeres Emprendedoras de Mishquiyacu is a grassroots group of women from the Peruvian jungle working together to preserve weaving techniques, support their families, and strengthen their community through creativity and collaboration.

This collective was born from a deep respect for the knowledge passed down through generations of women, knowledge rooted in the land, the rivers, and the threads that bind us. Through weaving, we not only carry forward tradition, but create new opportunities for empowerment and connection.

“Each time I travel to Peru, I bring art supplies and host a special day of art-making with the children in the village nurturing their imagination, joy, and voice through color, play, and expression. Thank you for supporting Las Mujeres Emprendedoras de Mishquiyacu. It means a lot to me and to them. ~ Jordy

Roseberry Road Studios will be holding a fundraising raffle on the private view night, August 1st, with prizes including a donation from each artist and Bibico, Bath-based women’s ethical clothing brand (more to follow).

All proceeds will be donated to this organisation in Peru.
