“In this life drawing workshop, we focus on expressive mark-making to capture the energy and movement of the pose rather than precise detail. Through a series of rapid poses - and moments where the model dances - participants draw quickly and instinctively, responding to rhythm and motion. With no time to worry about accuracy, the aim is simply to catch the feeling of the moment on the page.”

We are delighted to be presenting the work of London based artist Judith Brenner, in a solo show entitled BodyScapes in our main gallery this spring.

BodyScapes is a new collection of work in which Judith strives to convert the energy, emotion and movement that the human body generates especially through the moving body in dance, into the physical journey of paint on canvas or paper to take her in and out of the picture plane in the way one might use choreography.

Judith’s abstract paintings use the notion of alchemy to respond to her environment and life experiences on a search for strength and freedom. She channels the immediacy directly from the life model of mark-making, sketches and collage into abstraction.

‘After an important turning point in my life, my paintings became much more physical. There is a sensitivity learned from being a woman, going through childbirth, motherhood and bringing up children, that I want my paintings to be reflective of. Whether conscious or unconscious, my work absorbs and carries my emotions; the creation of each piece is both a physical and emotional struggle’.

Judith has exhibited widely both in solo and group shows in the capital including regularly at The Affordable Art Fair in Battersea, Wimbledon and Hammersmith. Her work is held in private collections globally, including the US, Australia and Europe.

Judith has a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Manchester Metropolitan University, also having completed a year on Newlyn School of Art Mentoring Scheme and Falmouth School of Art Summer Intensives. She held a residency at Brisons Veor Residency, Cape Cornwall. She recently completed a year at Turps Art School on their Offsite Painting Programme. She lives in southwest London and works from Kindred Spirit Studios in North Kensington where she teaches life drawing and mixed media workshops.
